Pompey Mountain Farm is a four acre hop farm on top of a mountain ridge, within the township of Pompey, NY. This mountain has a rich heritage of hop farming dating back to the 1780’s. This particular ridge stopped hop production during prohibition; And with Work Programs of Franklin Roosevelt of the 1930’s; building dams on the Columbia River, which created irrigation in Washington and Oregon, this led to the continued demise of future hop production of the Northeast. It is important to note, that Onondaga, Madison, and Oneida counties led the worlds hop production in the 1920’s
Our particular ridge, and its elevation, allows a complete extra hour of sunrise and sunset. -vs.- a flat plan or valley. The soil is naturally acidic, a particular requirement of hops. Farmers within the area routinely spread lime to “sweeten the soil”. The gentle slop of this farm allows for the perfect drainage, as well as the prevailing westerly winds, which naturally repels molds and mildews.
Due to the worldwide shortage of hops, conventional wisdom makes future brewers accept the problem of this shortage. This problem has accelerated the price of hops and made some verities completely unavailable to the new breweries.
Pompey Mountain Hops has fostered a partnership with local farms and breweries, which will support the local diverse agriculture market that will benefit the farming communities in Upstate NY.
